Philip woke up on his twenty-eighth birthday alone. It wasn’t unusual. He had a deep fear of relationships, and a sense of personal inadequacy his affluence and professional success couldn’t explain.
The one girl he did ask out for dinner recently listened, smirked, then turned away, laughing with her girlfriends. As she walked off, he saw a snag in her stockings, and that somehow made things a little better.
That night he dressed carefully in his best suit, watched the twinkling lights for a few minutes before calling his mother to ask if she wanted to go for a hamburger.
